Learn More about the Nutrition Needs in Teenage Health

The Importance of Proper Nutrition in Teenage Health

Teenagers need enough energy, protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals to support rapid growth, muscle development, concentration, bone building and normal immune function. A varied, balanced diet should come first; supplements are best used only when there is a specific nutritional gap or professional recommendation. [1]

      Do teenagers need supplements?

Most healthy teenagers should aim to meet nutritional needs through food. Supplements may be considered when a clinician or pharmacist identifies a likely gap, when dietary intake is restricted, or when a deficiency has been diagnosed. The appropriate product and dose depend on the reason for use.

Examples that may be considered under professional guidance include:

      • Multivitamin/mineral products when diet quality is consistently limited or specific nutrients are difficult to obtain from food. [7]
      • Calcium and vitamin D when intake is inadequate or a clinician identifies a need. [10,11]
      • Iron when iron deficiency is confirmed or strongly suspected. Iron supplements should not be taken casually because excess iron can be harmful. [12]
      • Omega-3 products when food sources are limited and a healthcare professional considers supplementation appropriate. NIH notes that omega-3 needs are preferably met through foods and that supplements can interact with medicines at higher doses. [13]

Important: Supplements should complement, not replace, regular meals. Ask a pharmacist, doctor or dietitian before giving a teenager high-dose vitamins or minerals, especially iron or vitamin D, or when the teenager takes medicines or has a medical condition.
